I have to be honest, I’m a sucker for gadgets! I’m an even bigger sucker for aviation gadgets and the Garmin G1000 does not disappoint.
The Garmin G1000 is an integrated flight instrument system, replacing most conventional flight instruments and avionics. The basic install includes 2 screens, one as your primary flight display and the other as a multi-function display. What’s even greater is you can add a third screen in larger planes for the co-pilot.
Primary flight display (PFD)
So the primary flight display has the basics – airspeed indicator, altimeter, heading indicator, course deviation indicator and an optional ‘minimap’ in the corner. The Primary flight display also has a mode that in the case of multi-function display failure, it is capable of displaying the same information as the MFD.
Multi-function display (MFD)
The MFD throws a wealth of information into the cockpit – navigation, weather, terrain, traffic and engine data. You can use ChartView™ to overlay your aircraft’s position on an electric chart to provide a visual crosscheck for safer takeoffs and landings. You can even get 3D landscapes!
I wonder if my flying school will be adding these to the 152’s anytime soon…
